Working through a headache? There are many different types of headaches with an assortment of causes. Whether annoyingly uncomfortable or a serious pain — headaches are no fun. While you may be used to reaching for over-the-counter medications, taking too many may lead to rebound headaches. Check out these tips and tricks to relieve your headache naturally:
Refresh with water and hydrating foods.
Many Americans are dehydrated with a reported 75% of the U.S. population not drinking the recommended amount of water daily. While there are varying opinions on the optimal amount of water to consumer per gender/weight/activity/etc. you should aim to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day. Alongside drinking plenty of water, eat hydrating foods like cucumber, watermelon, celery, leafy greens, carrots, pineapple, and orange.
Staying hydrated may help to reduce tension headaches and migraines. It will also help to keep you feeling focused and energized! If you find yourself with a headache — drink a glass of water. Rehydrating may help to relieve your headache in as little as 30 minutes.
Take a break and stretch out.
Sitting in the same position for an extended period of time creates tension that may contribute to head pain. Take a short break every 30-60 minutes to move around and stretch out your limbs (head + neck included). Rotate your head in small circles, alternating directions every five rolls to release built up stress in the neck.
Studies have found that regular physical exercise and yoga can also help to decrease ongoing headaches.

Close your eyes and relax.
Sometimes your head just needs a little break! Ongoing eye strain can lead to tension headaches. Put away the screens, close your eyes, and focus on your breathing. Sit or lay down in a dark room if possible and try to release tension in your back, shoulders, and neck.
Gently massaging your neck and temples may help with discomfort. You can also try to use a cold compress. Wrap an ice pack in a thin towel and apply to the head and neck to constrict blood vessels and alleviate pain. Heated compresses have also shown helpful in relieving tension headaches brought on by stress and anxiety.
Eat foods high in magnesium.
Magnesium is important for many functions in the body including maintaining blood sugar levels, nerve and muscle movement, immunity, cardiovascular health, bone strength, and helping to produce energy. Furthermore, magnesium has been shown to help ease head pains — particularly for those who suffer from frequent migraines. Get more magnesium in your diet by eating leafy greens, beans, seeds, dark chocolate, nuts, and whole grains.
Turn to essential oils for relief.
Essential oils have many uses including reducing pain from headaches and migraines. Try diluting peppermint oil with a little coconut oil and applying directly to the temples and back of the neck to relieve anxiety and increase blood circulation.
Lavender oils have been shown to help head pains when inhaled as the scent relaxes the body and puts your mind at ease. Try adding lavender oils to a bath or inhaling for at least 15 minutes. You can also apply the oil to the temples, back of the neck, and wrists.
Eucalyptus oils have proven to be effective when dealing with sinus headaches. The scent opens the nasal airways and works to eliminate sinus pressure that may cause head pain. Dilute a few drops of eucalyptus oil with coconut oil and apply to the chest, back of the neck, and temples for relief.
